Hot! Natural Hair Report Card: Top 10 Leave-in Conditioners

From September 2010-November 2010, I conducted a natural hair survey to find out what products are working for naturals. There were over 300 participants. I have compiled a list of the top ten picks in each category (Conditioners, Leave-in conditioners, Shampoos, Product lines, Moisturizers, Places to buy products, and Hair tools). Thanks to everyone who participated. If you didn’t participate this year, I hope you will participate in the Natural Hair Report Card for 2011.

Top 10 Leave-in Conditioners

10. Taaliah Waajid Black Earth

(Protective Mist Bodifier)

9. Koils By Nature

(Creamy Shealoe Moisturizing Leave-in)

8. Oyin Handmade

(Juices and Berries and Greg Juice)

7. Jane Carter

(Revitalizing Leave-in Conditioner)

6. Infusium 23

5. Homemade Leave-in

(Several people used Knot Today as a base for their leave-in)

4. Carol’s Daughter

(Primarily Black Vanilla Leave-in and Tui Leave-in)

3. Giovanni

(Giovanni Direct Leave-in)

2. Cantu

(Cantu Shea Butter Leave-in Conditioning Repair Cream)

1. Kinky Curly

(Knot Today)

In this category, lines targeted towards natural hair were the favorites. Also, some of the people participating added that they use their regular conditioner as a leave-in.

  1. Fantastic post. I found it very informative.

  2. I have heard of the kinky curly knot today but I use the cantu Shea butter leave in it’s pretty good. I follow mohoganycurls on YouTube and she uses Tressame moisture conditioner as her leave in I have been using it and it works pretty well.

  3. I’ve tried several of these and hands down Kinky Curly is the best detangler, however once my bottle runs out I’m not buying anymore. I don’t care for the smell and the KC Curling Custard doesn’t work on my hair.

  4. Love your post . Really

  5. I was very pleased to find your website. I wanted to thank you for this great read!! I definitely enjoying every little bit of it and I have you bookmarked to check out new stuff you post.

  6. Forgot to mention I also used the Carols Daughter. I dont remember how moisturising it was because the PROTEIN it contains made my hair harrrrdddddd. My hair seems to be sensitive to protein and I used the whole range of Carols daughter – shampoo, deep treatment, leave – in and then healthy hair butter – and all of those listed contain protein so my only memory from experience is the hardness of my hair not any moisture infusion

  7. I have used the Jane Carter, Infusium and Koils by Nature Leave- ins and they are all very effective. However, the Koils gives a certain amount of hold because of the aloe vera it contains. As for the infusium I wrote it off (i.e.stopped using it) because it contains PARABENS !!!

  8. I’m a big fan of Cantu Shea Butter Leave-in. It fits my budget and is available just about everywhere. The only thing I don’t like about it, is that it does not mix well with other products. I’ll have to try the Kinky Curly leave in, it’s very popular on youtube.

  9. I agree.. KCKT is my #1 favorite leave in cond!!…

  10. Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque is my fav leave-in conditioner.

  11. Yes to Cucumbers Daily Hydrating Hair Care Conditioner is also an excellent leave-in. It’s contains almost identical ingredients as their leave-in but it can be used as a rinse-out, deep conditioner, or leave in and it’s thick, rich, has great slip and is very moisturizing. At 16.9 ounces, it’s almost 2 1/2 times larger than their leave-in. Give it a try.

    • I’m loving this list lady, and some of my other naturalistas have given me some new conditioners to try as well, hats off to the list and to all the input from my naturals!

  12. You have given me lots of ideas of products to try. I’m glad to see so many black owned companies.

  13. I love Juices and Berries by Oyin and Knot Today. I used the Mist bodifier, but not as a leave-in. I am going to try it for that.
